The Beginning of a New Journey: Making Each of Your Café Visits Worthwhile

Welcome to the start of something new for both me and my business. Here in Sydney, we are surrounded by countless cafes—so many, in fact, that it seems like a new one opens every other day. Despite the high competition and often underpriced coffee, there are hidden gems out there just waiting to be discovered. That’s what I hope to bring you: a reliable guide to help you explore your city and make the most of what local cafes have to offer. Let’s bring this journey on!
I want this blog to be a go-to resource for anyone who loves great coffee and café culture. Whether you're deciding where to grab your morning brew or looking for the best place to work from, this guide will help you make an informed choice for your next café visit. To make things as objective and helpful as possible, I’ve created a protocol check item list that I’ll use to evaluate every café I visit. With this standardized approach, you can easily compare different cafes and know exactly what to expect before you walk through the door.
Here’s a breakdown of the scoring system I'll be using, based on key categories:
- Location and Atmosphere
- Accessibility: Is the café easy to get to by public transport, or does it have ample parking? Especially in a busy city like Sydney, a stress-free parking situation can make or break your café experience.
- Exterior Appeal: Does the storefront catch your eye? Is it inviting and well-maintained? People going on a blind date probably want to know about it.
- Interior Design: Does the interior match the branding or theme of the café? Is the decor something you'd want to spend time around? Lots of us will resonate on this point that the ambient environment matters a lot in the overall experience.
- Seating Comfort: Are the seating options varied and comfortable? After all, no matter how good the coffee is, uncomfortable seating can really detract from the experience.
- Ambiance: What’s the overall vibe of the place? Lighting, noise levels, and music all contribute to the experience.
- Cleanliness: This one’s non-negotiable. Tables, floors, and especially the bathrooms need to be clean.
- Customer Service
- Staff Friendliness: Are the staff polite and welcoming? In my experience, a friendly staff is often a good indicator of the overall quality of the café.
- Efficiency: How long does it take to place an order and receive your food or drink? This is especially important for those of us who visit cafes during work breaks or in a rush.
- Knowledge: Do the staff know their coffee? Can they explain the menu and make good recommendations?
- Personalization: Do they offer customization options? Whether it's plant-based milk or flavoured syrups, personalization is a key factor for many coffee lovers.
- Problem Solving: How do they handle special requests or complaints? Flexibility here can make a big difference.
- Menu Offerings
- Variety: Do they offer a range of coffee styles (espresso, pour-over, cold brew) and other drinks?
- Food: Are food options available, and do they pair well with the coffee? I’ve found that the best cafes offer a well-rounded menu.
- Specialty Options: Do they have any unique or seasonal drinks or seasonal roast?
- Dietary Options: Are there choices for those with dietary restrictions, like vegan or gluten-free?
- Pricing: Is the price fair for the quality of food and drinks?
- Coffee Quality
- Bean Origin: Do they list where their beans are sourced? Knowing the origin of the coffee adds a layer of trust and interest, especially for us coffee people. I will probably give a more weighted score on the coffee aspects of the café.
- Roast Profile: What type of roast are they using—light, medium, or dark? Is it balanced or funky?
- Brew Methods: How is the coffee brewed? Is it done using a variety of methods like espresso, pour-over, or French press?
- Taste Evaluation: Is the coffee balanced? Does it have a good mix of acidity, sweetness, and bitterness? I’ll be assessing each coffee for its complexity and flavour profile if the café I visit offers higher quality beans worth talking about.
- Consistency: Are the drinks consistent across visits or between multiple orders? I may not have this information during my first visit but I will definitely tell you in blog post updates.
- Coffee Equipment
- Espresso Machine: Are they using high-quality machines like La Marzocco or Synesso? The right equipment can make all the difference.
- Grinders: What kind of grinders are they using? Reputable brands like Mazzer or Mahlkönig indicate a café’s commitment to quality.
- Pour-Over Setup: What tools are they using for manual brewing? Seeing equipment like Hario V60 or Chemex is always a good sign.
- Overall Cleanliness: Are the machines and tools clean and well-maintained? This is crucial for the consistency and quality of the coffee.
- Overall Experience
- Value for Money: Do the quality of the coffee, food, and service justify the price?
- Comfort Level: Is this a place you’d feel comfortable working from or socializing with friends?
- Uniqueness: What makes this café stand out from the crowd?
- Recommendation Potential: Would I recommend this place to others?
