SCAJ2024 - A Journey into the Heart of Specialty Coffee Innovation
by Coffee Analytica Team
·
October in Japan, amidst the bustle of Tokyo’s city streets, marked a new chapter for us at Coffee Analytica. Despite the Australian school holidays inflating airfare prices, we knew attending SCAJ2024 - Asia’s largest specialty coffee exhibition - was an unmissable opportunity. It was our first time visiting Japan, a trip we had postponed for years. But this time, with SCAJ2024 in sight, we decided it was the perfect moment to immerse ourselves in the world of Japanese coffee culture.
The journey started with minimal preparation. Both my wife and I were swamped with work, leaving little time to plan our itinerary, book restaurants, or even map out must-see locations. Despite the rush, we managed to put together a trip that would turn out to be both spontaneous and rewarding. After spending three days navigating the streets and metro of Tokyo, we quickly became accustomed to the city's seamless public transport, unparalleled hospitality, and of course, its exceptional food.
First Impressions of SCAJ2024
When the event finally kicked off on October 9th at Tokyo Big Sight, the sheer scale of the exhibition was awe-inspiring. From roasters to coffee gear innovators, the diversity of exhibitors from around the globe was staggering. As we wandered through the south hall, filled primarily with coffee roasters, the familiar aromas of beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, and Brazil filled the air.
Though we were excited to connect with other Australian businesses, we made the conscious choice to focus on the local exhibitors, allowing us to dive deeper into Japan’s unique specialty coffee scene.
While the southern hall showcased excellent quality beans, there was a sense of familiarity—origin countries and stories we’d encountered before. It wasn’t until we ventured into the west hall, dedicated to coffee gear and equipment, that our world truly opened up.
Where Innovation Takes Centre Stage
In the west hall, the energy was electric. Over 300 businesses, from espresso machine manufacturers to creators of aroma kits and barista tools, filled the venue. The innovation on display was extraordinary. The Japanese exhibitors took pride in their meticulous craftsmanship, showcasing techniques that went beyond mere functionality—they embodied artistry.
One of the standout moments was witnessing the "Omakase" style coffee brewing. Just as the renowned Japanese sushi chefs do, these baristas treated coffee-making as a ritual, with every step performed with precision and care. It was an experience that shifted our perspective on what coffee can be. While in cities like Melbourne or Sydney, coffee culture often revolves around convenience—getting a good cup at the corner café—Japan’s approach was focused on elevating the entire experience, from bean to brew.
Japanese vs. Australian Coffee: A New Perspective
As we explored further, it became clear that the Japanese coffee scene is fundamentally different from Australia’s. While Australia is known for its high-quality specialty beans, often from Africa or Central America, Japanese businesses take things a step further by focusing heavily on brewing techniques and presentation. Their pride in every detail of the brewing process—be it espresso, pour-over, or cold brew—was apparent in each interaction.
This dedication to innovation was further highlighted during the World Barista Championship Japan 2024, which was happening in the same venue. Watching the competitors' advanced techniques and passion-filled presentations was awe-inspiring. Compared to the competition I witnessed in Melbourne during MICE, the level of precision, creativity, and innovation here felt like an entirely different world.
To draw a comparison, I think of Australia’s coffee culture as a beautiful natural soundscape—rich, organic, and authentic. But Japan? Japan is composing symphonies. They’ve taken coffee to a more intricate, artistic level, blending tradition with innovation to create something unique.
Bridging the Gap: East Meets West in Coffee
As I reflect on our experience at SCAJ2024, I realize the potential for Coffee Analytica to serve as a bridge between these two vibrant coffee cultures. We have a responsibility, not just as observers, but as facilitators of knowledge and experience. There’s so much that both sides of the world can learn from each other - whether it’s Japan’s attention to craft or Australia’s celebration of high-quality origins.
Moving forward, our mission is to bring the best of both worlds together. We want to help coffee enthusiasts, roasters, and café owners alike discover new techniques, flavours, and experiences that expand their horizons and deepen their appreciation for coffee as an art form.
Final Thoughts
SCAJ2024 was a profound reminder that there’s always more to explore in the world of coffee. Whether it’s the innovative gear on display or the cultural differences in how coffee is brewed and enjoyed, this event has left a lasting impact on how we at Coffee Analytica will approach our mission.
We’re excited to share these insights and innovations with you, and we look forward to continuing our journey of bridging the gap between East and West, bringing the best of specialty coffee to your cup.
