The story of MAVO began not in a high-rise office, but among three college friends with a shared dream and an entrepreneurial spirit. The founding team - Kong and his two close friends, all from creative industry backgrounds - were captivated by coffee, a passion that grew into an idea as they noticed a rising trend in China. In the early 2010s, major city streets were beginning to fill with Starbucks and COSTA Coffee outlets, yet the high prices of these international brands felt out of reach for many in China. As Kong observed this coffee culture emerging, he saw the gap between the premium café experience and the average consumer's access to quality coffee at home.
Kong, ever the visionary, began diving into the technical side of coffee, from roasting to brewing, dissecting the entire process from coffee farm to coffee cup. He came to a bold realization: the future of coffee in China was not just in cafés - it was in people’s homes. At that time, Chinese households primarily relied on tea pots and strainers, which were unfit for brewing high-quality coffee, and instant coffee like Nestlé 3-in-1 dominated the market. Seeing this gap, Kong anticipated a shift. He sensed that as coffee culture continued to grow, there would be a huge domestic market for quality home-brewing gear that could deliver café-level results.
In pursuit of inspiration, Kong travelled to nearby Hong Kong, where he found young people brewing coffee at home with simple gear to save money. One day, a friend in Hong Kong brewed him a cup, and Kong was struck by the quality - rivaling that of any Starbucks coffee. Yet, he found the equipment clunky and purely functional, lacking the style and appeal he envisioned. This moment ignited an idea: he could design brewing gear that not only functioned beautifully but looked beautiful, too - appealing to consumers who wanted both quality and elegance in their home coffee experience.
Returning to Guangzhou, Kong shared his vision with his two friends, both well-paid corporate directors at the time. The three evaluated their stable but uninspiring corporate paths against the excitement and potential of creating something entirely new. With the shared sense that the traditional "iron rice bowl" jobs weren’t as secure after the 2008 economic crisis, they decided to take a leap. The journey that followed wasn’t easy; in fact, it was gruelling. They struggled through the first five years, enduring financial strains that nearly led to personal bankruptcy multiple times before 2017. Yet, their perseverance carried them through.
In 2018, MAVO started to gain momentum, finally feeling as though they were on track toward their goals. Just as they hit their stride, however, the world faced an unprecedented pandemic in 2019 (unprecedented in modern history). Travel restrictions and lockdowns forced people to work from home, fundamentally altering lifestyles and buying habits. Overnight, home brewing and coffee gear became essential, leading to a surge in demand for quality home appliances - and MAVO experienced an unexpected period of hyper-growth over the next four years. Coffee gear flew off shelves as people sought to replicate café-quality coffee at home, catapulting MAVO into the spotlight.
Reflecting on this period, Kong shared, “If it wasn’t for this sudden shift in lifestyle, MAVO might still be on the borderline of survival.” Their experience instilled a powerful lesson: be prepared, always. As Kong often reminds me, “Opportunities don’t come every year, and when they do, only those who are prepared can seize them.” Their success owes much to their determination, resilience, and the comprehensive supply chain they built in China.
